Last week, we went high, and this week we’re keeping it Low Key. Low Key photography, simply put, is creating a frame that is mostly DARK!
It is all about mood, shadows, and rich contrast! It typically uses dark tones and emphasizes shadows to create drama, mystery, or intensity but not necessarily Spooky Spooky in the image. Unlike High Key, which floods the scene with light, Low Key leaves much of the frame in shadow, with only selective lighting to highlight the subject.
Like last week, this doesn’t mean your blacks should be clipped black, nor does it mean you can’t have proper white in your frame. You can choose how extreme you want to process but it’s an aesthetic choice. So long as most of your frame is dark, you are shooting in the style of low key.
